Pavelec strong, but Avs fall to Wings

October 12, 2010
DETROIT - Ondrej Pavelec showed athleticism and a bit of acrobatics on Tuesday, as his 25-save performance included a flurry of saves in the second period with his team down 2-0. With Detroit up with goals in the first from Brian Rolston and David Legwand, Pavelec made four saves and saw another shot hit the post on one Detroit shift as the Avalanche failed to get the puck out of the zone. The Wings got to the Colorado goalie twice in the first, with Evander Kane sitting for Colorado after tripping Mike Modano, Rolston blasted a shot from the point at 12:18, which seemed to cleanly beat Pavelec. Replays showed him looking to his right though, as the shot came with just a bit of a screen from the Avs' Tomas Vanek. Just under tw ominutes later at 14:40, Pavel was surrounded and Legwand was able to turn and fire a quick shot from the slot to make it 2-0. Colorado's lone goal came on a giveaway by Wings goalie Tim Thomas, who had to make just 8 saves in his debut. Colorado's ninth and final shot came after Thomas came out to negate an icing and flipped the puck off the boards right to Steve Downie, who shot it in the gaping net ahead of a diving try by Brian Rafalski. Mike Grier had two assists to help lead the wings to a perfect 3-0 start.

Wings spoil Hawks' banner-raising ceremony

October 5, 2010
CHICAGO - Rostislav Klesla came inches away from being the hero of the night on Saturday, as his hit post missed tying a tight game that Detroit would end up winning, 3-2. David Legwand opened the scoring at 17:04 after great pressure by Chicago resulted in two posts and seven saves by Ryan Miller, who got the start in back to back games. Drayson Bowman made it 2-0 at 10:35 of the second with his first NHL goal, beating Anttii Niemi from a bad angle. Jeff Finger and Steve Ott fought after Finger layed him out. Ott came back and slashed him and the two dropped the gloves. Ott got the best of Finger but went to the penalty box holding his face. With Chicago already on the powerplay, The Hawks took advantage of the momentum swing the fight caused and Olesz put them on the board at 14:27, their first powerplay goal this season. James Wisniewksi made it 3-1 just three minutes after Olesz' close call denied him his second goal. Chad Kolarik got the Hawks back in the game, taking a nice drop pass from Chris Bourque and undressing Ryan Miller, flipping a backhand top shelf to make it 3-2. That would finish the scoring as Chicago couldn't take advantage of a pulled Niemi and an extra skater. David Legwand finished the game with a goal and assist to be named the first star, while Nathan Gerbe and Matt Hunwick each had two assists.
